The second week of the annual OTH Charity Tournament had some surprises to say the least. The first upset was #10 seed Changing Times overcoming Synergy (#4) Tuesday night. CT appears to be peaking at the right time as they played Mers real tough the previous week only to lose on a late HR. In this game, Synergy's entire line-up each had a hit but was unable to get them when it counted most. Their big blast was Bill Fitzpatrick's long HR when Synergy was fighting to get back into the game. Bill had two hits for the night along with Joe Lutz and "Tall" Mike Maier. Tommy Vanasco had three hits including a long triple.
Defensively, Fitzpatrick had some great plays at short behind Bob Joyce who provided a steady performance on the mound. The other result from this bracket was Moby surprising Mers, leaving all four teams with a 1-1 record going into the final game. Singleton's (2-0) keeps rolling along, this week defeating a stubborn B&M (1-0-1) team 14-9. B&M came out swinging with three quick runs in the first only to have Singletons respond with seven in their half and another three in the second. Things were quiet until the fourth when B&M erupted for six runs to make it a one-run game. In the seventh Singletons banged across four more insurance runs to secure the hard-fought win. Hitting stars on the night were Tom "Satch" Camarda, Richie Smindak, Al Veneziano, Dennis Passaretti, Paul Canalattos and Bob Davis; all with 2 big hits each .... and another HR by Benny (Barry Bonds) Alberto. PS hey John (Gannon), tonight's game is at 8:20 p.m. sharp not 9:40, ok? In losing to Singleton B&M felt they had little to cheer about on the field but plenty to celebrate in their post game gathering (which tree?). Pete Mendelson and his wife became grandparents for the first time, a boy, Dylan James, born last Friday. Congratulations to the proud grandparents (and of course mom & dad).
Also congrats to Joe "Hurricane" Algerio and his wife on their marriage. Its seems Joe and his wife will never forget their recent wedding and their honeymoon with Charley (as in Hurricane Charlie) down in Florida. Lots of happiness to you and your wife Joe, good guys like you deserve it. The other game for this bracket had O'Sheas beating M&T 13-5. Leading O'Sheas were Carl Willemin who made an outstanding defensive gem in the outfield, and offensively it was Robby Kirk who was clutch all night including a grand slam. In the last bracket Bar Boy bounced back from their first week loss in beating a shorthanded Bethpage PT. Bar Boy is now 1-1 while PT drops to 0-2.
Barco added another win with their 20-5 victory over Hampton Air. Barco goes to 2-0 while Hampton Air evened their record at 1-1. Barco's win was a team effort as the entire line-up produced clutch hits with nine guys driving in runs, led by Mayor Terry McPartland (he yaks) and Dave Ringer's 4 RBIs. Also coming up big were Steve Jacobson (3-3, 3 RBIs), Kevin Moloney (3-4 2 RBIs), Rick Pedone (2-3 2 RBIs), Tom Burke and Dave Ringer (3-4). Showing some old-time power and speed (?), Barco original Phil Tripoli smacked a double and triple. He must have gone to Bob "Woody" Diamonds base running clinic, who smacked his second triple in two weeks. At least this week Woody knew enough when to run, and not to worry about his hat. Providing the power for Barco with HRs were Terry McPartland, Dave Ringer and Steve "Baby Steps" Schwind.
