I've written very few editorials in my four-plus years at the Observer. My very first one, "Meet the Editor," back in August 2000, was quite easy to write. This one, however, is not, as I am writing to say goodbye. I am moving on in my career and my last day as editor of the Observer will be September 22.
Back in 2000, with nervous hands, I wrote that I couldn't wait to get to know all the great components that make up the Farmingdale community. Now, after more than four years, I feel that I know Farmingdale better than my own home town and often joke that I should be permitted to vote in local elections.
So how, after four memorable years, can I possibly even begin to say goodbye to all the wonderful people I've met? Since it's impossible to list everyone, both at the office and in the neighborhood, please accept my gratitude for all of your help, support and encouragement. This paper was my "baby" when I started working at this company and it's very hard to let it go, but I am confident that it is being left in good hands.
Some of you may have already had the pleasure of meeting Jaime Tomeo, who has been freelancing for the paper since the spring. She is going to take over the reins as editor and I have the utmost confidence that the transition will be a smooth and successful one. More importantly, I'm sure that Farmingdale will open its arms to her just as it did to me when I first started.
Thank you again for all of the wonderful memories and for your assistance and support in making the Observer the publication that it is today.
