Friday's early game matched up both division leaders-Mers and Singleton's, which had major implications for determining who would be the top seed in the year-end tournament. Singleton's came out swinging with 3 in the 1st with Mers answering back with 1. Big Red continued to score every frame while Red pitcher Frank (Grandpa) Gordon kept the Green bats in check and at the end of 5 the score was 16-3 in favor of Singleton's. The last 4 innings were uneventful making the final score 16-5 in favor of the guys in Red, clinching the best record and the number 1 seed. Hitting stars on the evening with 3 hits was Paul Canalattos; with 2 hits were Frank Gordon, Al Veneziano, Richie Cirillo, Steve Buchter, Bob Davis, Tommy Sorrentino (inc. a grand slam homerun), Dennis Passaretti, and Benny Alberto. It hasn't been the most successful of seasons for B&M Electric, but last Friday night the team turned things around and won a "double-header" on a hot, muggy night. The first game was the result of a protest ruling that came down in B&M's favor. The contest against M&T picked up in the 8th inning with B&M clinging to a one run lead. B&M added 2 insurance runs, but M&T hung in there and tied the game with a 2-out, 3-run homer in the 8th. But B&M did not fold...hits by Tom Bailey, Joe Manning, T-Ball, Joe Algerio and Joe Cipolla helped secure the win. The happiest guy on the field after that game was easily Joe Manning. In the nightcap, B&M beat Changing Times 18-10. This game was closer than its final score with multiple lead changes. Kris Solberg pitched well despite a sore back. Joe "Wedding Bells" Algerio and Pete Mendelson chipped in with superb defense on the left side of the infield. Offensively there were numerous stars, Beno Reverberi, Tom "T" Ball and Jerry Mazza belted home runs. Joe Cipolla, Tom Bailey, Kris Solberg and Joe Manning had 3 hits each. Brian Tinney, John Defalco, Pete Mendelson and Joe Algerio with 2 hits apiece. Also a special thanks goes out to Brian Tinney Jr. for keeping score. We're still waiting for Bobby Shubert's boat to pull into port. Hope he brings the catch of the day to the next game. Barco, with their 15-11 win over Bethpage PT clinched the second seed for the tournament, ending the season at 13-3. Terry McPartland put on an awesome offensive display, going 4-4 with a triple. 2 HRs and 7 RBIs but also paid the price by taking a throw in his back, and that was before he hit the HRs. Coming up big for Barco as well were Gary Jambor (4-4 2 RBIs), Gentleman Tony Falcone (3-4), and Dennis Ryan (2-4 HR). Tom Burke (2-4 2 RBIs) continued his impressive return from the IR with his two clutch RBI hits. Bill White put on a dazzling display of pitching when he came in to pitch the 8th; obviously he bowls better than he pitches. The PT batters wanted to swing but had trouble doing so when they had to dodge the pitch, if fact the umpire warned him for throwing at them. At least he provided some comic relief (to some), although a few of his teammates were getting a bit "anxious."
