Entering their game with St. Thomas on Monday, June 7, St. Kilian's record was 4 wins and 5 losses. The boys took the field at Saltzman-East Memorial Elementary School with a desire to cap their inaugural season with a .500 record.

Mike Pavese, the workhorse of the staff, was given the ball to start the game. The St. Kilian defense showed that they had come to play, as catcher T.J. DiCarlo sprang out of his crouch to snare a foul ball pop-up by St. Thomas' leadoff hitter. Pavese proved that he was up to the task as set down the St. Thomas hitters, without allowing a base runner. St. Kilian drew first blood as T.J. DiCarlo smacked a single to center, scoring Kyle Peck from second base. However, the St. Kilian offense sputtered as they stranded DiCarlo at third base. Nick Koppel at second base and Pavese at first base. St. Thomas appeared to be ready to mount a comeback, as their clean-up hitter led off the second inning with a single to rightfield and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. With the help of fine defensive play in rightfield by Kyle Peck, Pavese shut the door on St. Thomas, stranding the runner at second base. Not to be outdone, the St. Thomas pitcher tied up the St. Kilian batters in the bottom of the second inning, keeping the score at 1 to 0. St. Thomas again started a comeback in the top of the third inning as their first batter smashed a double to right-centerfield and advanced to third base on a ground out to second baseman Alex Woloshin. With a runner at third base and only one out and with his nurturing a one run lead, Pavese buckled down and struck out the next two St. Thomas batters. Desirous of padding their lead, the St. Kilian batters struck again in the bottom of the third inning. A one out single to centerfield by Jonathan Anderson was followed by a walk to Kyle Peck. Anderson was thrown out on a ground ball by T.J. DiCarlo, but the runners advanced on a walk to first baseman Nick Koppel. A walk to Mike Pavese scored Peck, increasing the St. Kilian lead to 2 to 0.

Pavese collared the St. Thomas batters in the top of the fourth inning, assisted by a tremendous defensive play by left fielder Keith McNicholl, who made a sliding one-hand grab of a fly ball to short leftfield. Fueled by their defensive plays, the St. Kilian batters erupted in the bottom of the inning. Third baseman Chris Maier lashed a single to leftfield and took second base on an error. Keith McNicholl and right fielder Sean Naus followed with walks. With one out and the bases loaded, Alex Woloshin walked, scoring Maier. Jimmy Rogers then beat out an infield single, knocking in McNicholl. Naus was cut down at home plate on a grounder by Jonathan Anderson. However, this time with two outs and the bases loaded, the St. Kilian batters refused to be denied. A walk to Kyle Peck forced in Woloshin and a scorching single to right centerfield by T.J. DiCarlo scored Rogers and Anderson. The St. Kilian team scored five runs in the inning and took a commanding 7-0 lead. The team's fine defensive play continued to give Pavese the support which he needed, when with one out and a runner on first base, second baseman Alex Woloshin leaped and snared a line drive and with a strong throw to first baseman Nick Koppel turned the team's only double play of the game. The St. Kilian offense stalled in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Pavese took his two-hit shutout into the last inning. The first two St. Thomas batters were quickly dispatched on grounders to second base and back to the mound. After walking the next batter, Pavese appeared to tire but refused to leave the mound. Four pitches later, as the ball was enveloped by catcher Jimmy Rogers' mitt, the last St. Thomas batter was called out on strikes, giving the St. Kilian boys their first shutout of the season and a 500 record for the season.

The coaches and the players on the St. Killian-2 Sixth Grade CYO Boys Baseball team enjoyed a fun-filled spring of baseball. The team exhibited a vast improvement from the squad that took the field during its first practice only two months earlier. The boys showed the determination, enthusiasm and team spirit that is the benchmark of a true winner. The coaching staff wishes to thank all of the parents for their support and assistance in making this season a success. They also wish to thank the St. Kilian parish, John Ianno, CYO chairman and Tom Cinelli, the CYO coordinator, for their invaluable support in our inaugural season. Most importantly, they gratefully acknowledge the boys who played for our team this season, many of who will be continuing on with the team into the Baba Ruth Summer League.
