The Farmingdale Village Pops Concerts are returning to the Village Green for their 22nd year. Under the direction of founder Brad DeMilo, the concerts will enjoy a new home for at least part of the season, in the newly constructed and, as of this week, almost completed, gazebo bandstand. The Village Pops Concerts are held Wednesdays throughout the summer, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Beginning next week, on June 30, the shows will run for seven consecutive weeks. In event of rain next Wednesday and throughout July, the concerts will be moved to Howitt Middle School. An August location has yet to be determined. According to DeMilo, included on this year's concert calendar is a WWII concert, a children's concert and patriotic concerts. Guest conductors will again be called up from the audience to lead the band and residents can again look forward to an ice cream giveaway. DeMilo added that the community band will be performing some of the old classics, in addition to some new repertoire. "We try to keep it fresh," he said. The Minute of Farmingdale History, a series of lectures provided by local community members and representatives about the community's past, will also continue. This way of focusing on Farmingdale's heritage was begun by DeMilo as part of the community's Tricentennial of Settlement observance in 1987. Some of this year's speeches will undoubtedly focus on the 100th anniversary of the village's incorporation. The popularity of the annual concerts keeps growing from year to year and residents are once again invited to bring down their lawn chairs and blankets, with their family and friends, to enjoy the festivities. DeMilo said he is particularly excited to have the use of the new gazebo bandstand. "The man responsible for its beauty is Mr. [Vincent] Sotis," DeMilo said, noting that Sotis' architectural firm provided the design. DeMilo also recognized Sotis' son for his contribution in designing the gazebo. For further information about the Village Pops Concert Series, one may call Farmingdale Village Hall at 249-0093.
