In 1972, the Farmingdale Athletic Association was born. This idea of a sports association that had both roller hockey and soccer was a huge success, under the leadership of Sal Gioeli, president. The group flourished. There was a genuine need and desire for active participation in these sports.
Allen Park in Farmingdale was the home to this infant league and now the main soccer field at the park is going to be dedicated to Gioeli.
Through the tremendous efforts of the Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto and the town board, along with the Department of Parks, under Commissioner Edward Kennedy, the soccer field will bear the name of Sal Gioeli.
On Sunday, June 13 at noon, the formal dedication will take place. Town representatives, as well as county officials, will be present along with many members of the Gioeli family and friends to help Farmingdale honor one of its own.
