On a beautiful spring afternoon, while most boys were out playing baseball or lacrosse, Tom Cinelli's St. Kilian sixth-grade CYO Boys Basketball Team traveled to Old Field Middle School in Huntington to open its Spring Basketball season. Knowing that some of their players would miss some games due to prior commitments to other sports, the team added two players to its active roster for the spring season. Center Matt Ward was added from the team's injured reserve list and forward Billy Warren was added "on loan" from one of the other sixth-grade St. Kilian teams.

On Saturday, May 1, an undermanned St. Kilian team took the court against the powerful NBAC All-Stars. The St. Kilian team quickly displayed the same tenacious defense and run and gun offense which was their trademark during the fall CYO basketball season. St. Kilian took control of the game early, handcuffing the All-Stars' offense and never allowing the All-Stars' defense to set up. St. Kilian ran its patented offense: fast-breaking, passing the ball to the open man, breaking the All-Stars' press and dominating the offensive boards. The team broke out to an 8-point lead at the end of the first quarter and continued to build on that lead until the final buzzer, when the game ended in a resounding 50-to-21 St. Kilian victory.

The St. Kilian offense was spearheaded by Alex Woloshin (13 points, 3 steals, 3 assists, 2 rebounds), Chris Pavese (10 points, 2 steals, 4 assists, 3 rebounds), Glenn Cinelli (6 points, 2 steals, 2 rebounds) and Morton Chambers (6 points, 15 rebounds).

The St. Kilian defense blanketed the All-Stars' ball handlers and shooters and dominated the defensive boards. The St. Kilian guards pressed the All-Stars in their backcourt, trapping the ball and forcing them into numerous turnovers. The suffocating St. Kilian defense held the All-Stars to 2 points in the first quarter and 7 points in the first half. The St. Kilian defense was led by Joe DiDonna (3 points, 9 rebounds), Mike Pavese (2 points, 2 steals, 2 assists), Willie Thompson (3 steals) and Billy Warren (2 rebounds).

The St. Kilian team scored an impressive victory in its opening game and hopes to continue its success through both the Huntington Spring league and the Rockville Centre Summer league.
