Senator Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. announced that legislation he sponsored, which would tighten hiring requirements for people seeking employment with an alarm installation company, passed the New York State Senate. The legislation requires all employees of alarm installation companies to submit fingerprints to the state and pass a background check prior to beginning employment.
"It is important to be sure that the people who install and maintain our security systems are not a threat themselves," said Fushcillo. "My legislation will tighten the security standards and continue New York State's efforts to provide our citizens with the highest level of protection."
Current law requires licensed alarm installers to submit fingerprint cards of all employees to the Department of State for a criminal background check. If an employee has been convicted of a serious crime involving fraud, bribery, perjury or theft, the licensed alarm installer must terminate that person's employment. However, the law allows people to work while the state is conducting its investigation.
Fuschillo's legislation prohibits licensed alarm installers from employing someone to assist in the installation, service or maintenance of alarm systems until a background check is completed by the Department of State. The state's background check will help alarm employers filter out potential security threats, enhancing the safety of homes and businesses.
The legislation was sent to the Assembly.
