The St. Luke's Lutheran Senior Boys basketball team's season came to an abrupt but successful end on March 31. The Farmingdale team played at St. Peter's Church in Huntington Station for the Long Island Championship against Our Redeemer Church of Seaford, following an undefeated season against Lutheran teams on Long Island.

The St. Luke's team was never behind but led by three points after the first quarter and by ten points at the half. But the Our Redeemer team was gathering many fouls against its players. By the third quarter with less than a minute to go, the referee ended the game abruptly with St. Luke's in the lead after Our Redeemer had committed three technicals in a row and was disqualified from the match.

While the St. Luke's team was happy to win the championship and keep its undefeated season alive, the players were disappointed to not have played a full four-quarter game.

The Long Island championship win was a successful way for coaches Jerry Sutherland and Harry Appel to cap the season. The team had just returned from a trip to Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, to compete in a national tournament against other Lutheran church teams. On that trip, the St. Luke's team played a strong Wisconsin team, and then played in the consolation round in which they lost to a Trinity team from Michigan. However, the team toured the nearby Notre Dame University campus and took in other sites in the Midwest.

The players would like to thank Mr. Sutherland and Mr. Appel for a very successful season and many good memories, as well as Mrs. Appel, Mr. and Mrs. Wiking and Mr. Schreiner for assisting them on their trip to Indiana. The team would also like to thank their many loyal fans and supporters.
