Rosemary J. Terino, dedicated reading teacher at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, died suddenly on March 10, 2004. She was 52. She graduated from Farmingdale High School and Hofstra University. She served the children in the Connetquot Central School District for 31 years, beginning as a first grade teacher in First Street School. She assumed the leadership of reading teacher with the retirement of Helen B. Duffield, for whom the school was later named.

Rosemary J. Terino

A curriculum innovator, she introduced technology to her school with a PET computer before 1980. She has been an active trendsetter in establishing and launching new reading programs in the schools and she ran the Title I program at Duffield. This responsibility included coordinating state testing, presenting evening parent workshops, and overseeing instructional assistants.

Andrea Moskowitz, Title I Project Coordinator and Curriculum Specialist, describes Rosemary as the "go-to" person, a dependable and reliable organizer. Fellow reading teachers remember her dedication to the school that she loved and her generosity and willingness to offer a helping hand to everyone. But above all else, "Rosemary was love," agreed Mary Jane Nolan and Maureen Strissler. Harriet Loshin, the retired reading teacher who has canceled her obligations to fill the vacancy left by Rosemary, reflects on her dedicated professionalism, her deep love and devotion to family, her steadfast loyalty to her friends, and her keen sense of humor.

As facilitator in the Literacy Collaborative program, she helped set up bookrooms in her school as well as classroom libraries. As a teacher representative in PTA, Miss Terino was instrumental in bringing authors of children's books for programs and helped plan cultural arts programs.

So that Duffield could be recognized as an Honor School, Rosemary solicited samples of students' writing, proofed and verified the authenticity of the works, printed and prepared a presentation that was submitted to the Suffolk County Reading Council.

She was an energetic fundraiser for "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" as she enrolled 100 sponsors to support her walk for the American Cancer Society in 2003. Her peers recognized her as an experienced mentor, a compassionate advisor and a talented knowledgeable educator. She also served on the Crisis Intervention Team at the Duffield School.

Leisure activities for Rosemary included enjoying flowers and plants, traveling with friends, going to concerts and theater productions, Yankees baseball, visits to Atlantic City and Mohegan Sun, crocheting and walking for health.

Respected by parents, teachers and administrators, loved by students and friends, Rosemary will be sadly missed by her surviving parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Terino of Massapequa Park and her sister, Theresa (Stephen) Thomson of Dannemora, NY.
