Michael Carter of Jefferson HS in Dallas throws the high school boys shot put 81 feet, 3.5 inches at the 1979 Golden West Invitational. The feat is largely considered the greatest prep mark in history. Edwin Moses wins 122 consecutive races, including 107 finals. The streak lasts nine years, nine months and nine days. At the 1996 Olympics, Michael Johnson becomes the only man is history to win both the 200 and 400 meters at a single Olympic game. These three events, along with numerous more, are being submitted to USA Track and Field for consideration in the Top 25 Greatest Moments in the sport.

There is a good chance that there will be a Daler moment in the mix. This year's Varsity Boys Winter Track Team is poised for greatness. A total of 68 student-athletes participate in the daily workouts and training schedules that become the backbone of the sport itself. Coach Henning provides the motivation and incentive for this disciplined group of men. "The individual events lead to a team score," he mentioned. "Hard work, dedication and the willingness to push yourself" are three ingredients that have paid off for the Dalers as they enter this season. Since events are individualized, so are the workouts. Members of the team work with trainers in the various events, which include the shot put, pole vault and long jump. Sprinters and distance runners get special attention, too. Coach Henning feels that the team will be extremely competitive once some of the injuries are healed. Team members include:

Chris has been a fantastic addition to the Daler Winter Track team. In just his second year of competition, he has brought forward a variety of personal strengths acquired from other sports he plays, such as football and lacrosse, for the Farmingdale High School Dalers. "I started running track," Chris mentioned, "because Mr. Henning thought I had some potential." Chris covers ground, as well as his studies, at a rather quick pace. History provides a sense of understanding time and events. "I enjoy learning about the past," he stated. English offers a chance to create and learn. "I love to write as well as read," Chris said. Along with spending time with close friends, Chris likes to work on the computer. He plans to go on to college and wants to "focus on a degree in law enforcement." He makes time to give back to the Farmingdale community, volunteering his time to help out as a coach for the Farmingdale Titans. "I love football," Chris smiled, "so it was an easy choice to get involved." When it comes to competing on the field, Chris has what it takes for success. "I try as hard as I can," he commented. "And push my body to the limit. I want to be the best." For his events in Track and Field, Chris continues to work on improving his game. "I train hard with my track coach," he said, "to improve my stamina as well as strength." His goal is to one day hold the school record for the 55-meter dash. With the Daler vision and work ethic that Chris exhibits, you're sure to see his name in that spot real soon. When you check the listing in years to come, Jon will most certainly be considered one of the all-time Daler greats. He has been a most versatile student-athlete throughout his high school career. He has participated in track for the past four years, initially being persuaded by the coach to join up. "I'd like to thank Mr. Henning and Mr. Berardi, the track coaches, for their encouragement throughout the years." His presence has brought more than just victories for the Daler team. "I try to bring leadership and a hard-working attitude to the team, which I hope carries over to my teammates," he stated. Jon is driven to excellence in academics. He is a member of the National Honor Society, The French Honor Society, the French Club and the Key Club, "whose sole purpose is community service." His contributions to that, and other service groups have been well received. He has raised money for breast cancer research, cerebral palsy and the American Heart Association. He has volunteered for clothing and food drives and has rung a bell or two on behalf of the Salvation Army. Jon has embraced the educational experience offered at FHS, enjoying Math and Humanities. "The 10th grade Humanities class taught by Mrs. Hartford and Mr. Schwinn was the most challenging and rewarding course I took in high school," he said. Jon has lettered in Varsity Football and participates in PAL basketball, Farmingdale's Babe Ruth and St. Kilian's baseball teams. To relax, Jon enjoys the Long Island beaches, logs in and chats with friends on line and is known to be quite adept at a number of video games. Jon is considering a number of colleges such as Boston College, Villanova and Loyola to mention a few. Ranked 18th in his class overall (and on the high honor roll every semester during high school) he'll look forward to pursuing a business career upon his graduation with the Class of 2004. He has made All County honors in track for 2002 and 2003. Jon was MVP for the Indoor Track team in 2003 and received the Coaches Award for Outdoor Track 2003. He was also the Nassau County Pole Vault Champion that year and represented Section VIII in the NY State Track & Field Championships. Jon has been recognized as a Daler who has met and exceeded the challenges for his school and community. Evan goes the distance when it comes to being the ultimate Daler. He has been a well-rounded and most versatile individual throughout his high school career. Evan has grown to enjoy the Daler Winter Track experience. "The coach kept asking me to try," he mentioned. "So, I listened and eventually became successful." He credits watching those who came before him perform day in and day out. "I adopted their work ethic," Evan said, "and learned a lot from them." Evan is a member of the Varsity Leaders Club and also plays football in addition to running Spring Track as well. "I love sports in general," he commented, "both as a participant and a spectator." He takes to the classroom, enjoying English and social studies. "I love history," Evan stated. "And, through English, I have a way of getting across to all types of people." He has always helped out his neighbors, making sure to shovel driveways for the elderly. "That puts a smile on my face," Evan winked. "I love to help people out." Evan has plans to attend college and eventually find a job that he will enjoy. He has been a stand out athlete in terms of attitude and outlook. "I bring a serious work ethic," he said, "and try to enjoy myself at the same time." He is always striving to improve his skills. "I have worked on trying to improve my distance. . how far I can throw the shot put," he stated. "I have made advances, but I'm still not satisfied." Evan is a Daler that continues to take it to the next level and beyond.
