Responding to repeated requests from Farmingdale Village Mayor Joseph Trudden on behalf of many area residents, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has installed a left turn signal for northbound traffic at the intersection of Main Street and Fulton Street (Route 109). The new signal will improve the overall traffic flow and enhance safety at this busy intersection.

Deputy Mayor Benjamin Giminaro, Trustee Marialyce Denauski and Mayor Joseph Trudden inspect plans for the busy intersection where the new turn signal has been recently activated.

"Several years ago, the DOT improved this intersection, installing a new signal system and adding new turning lanes for better traffic flow," said Mayor Trudden. "While they added turning lanes for both north and southbound Main Street traffic, they only added a left turn signal for southbound traffic. This has forced Main Street northbound motorists seeking to make a left turn onto Fulton Street to literally nose their vehicles in between heavy volumes of oncoming traffic. With a dedicated left turn signal, northbound motorists will now have a better opportunity to complete their left turn onto Fulton Street safely. I'm pleased that the state has added this important traffic safety measure."

This intersection is particularly difficult for motorists due to the fact that the roads do not intersect at straight angles, creating limited sight distances. In addition, Main Street dissects angles, creating limited sight distances. In addition, Main Street dissects Farmingdale's popular downtown shopping district, further increasing the volume of traffic passing through this intersection on a daily basis.

The state DOT is also expected to install similar left turn signals at the intersection of Main and Conklin Streets in the near future, Mayor Trudden added.
