As a two-time kidney transplant recipient, I have, once again, joined with Governor Pataki as he has proclaimed Nov. 27 as "Give Thanks, Give Life Day" in the Empire State. This day, at Thanksgiving dinners throughout New York State, it is a great opportunity to begin a dialogue with family members to discuss the possibility of giving life to others by becoming an organ donor.
It is critical for intended donors to discuss their desires with family members who are most likely to be asked for consent if the opportunity arises. Many family members may be reluctant to consider donation of the organs and tissues of a deceased loved one at such a difficult and emotional time if your individual wishes have not been clearly expressed.
New York State citizens have the opportunity to join the New York State Organ and Tissue Donor Registry - a confidential database established to document as individual's intent to donate in the event of death - by completing the organ donor form on the back of their driver's license and enrolling in the registry on the Health Department's website at www.health.state.ny.us and click on the "Life: Pass it On" icon.
Today, more than 8,200 New Yorkers are awaiting life-saving transplantation surgery made possible only through the generosity of organ and tissue donors. It is my hope that as most New Yorkers spend part of their Thanksgiving Day with family that they discuss the possibility of giving life to others on this traditional day of giving thanks for all our blessings.
