Muriel Louise Reul of Boulder, CO, formerly of Farmingdale, died on Sept. 22, 2003 at Life Care in Longmont, CO. Born on LI on May 3, 1912, she was the daughter of Albert Timoney and Louise Finlay Timoney. After the early death of her parents, Muriel was raised in Ronkonkoma by her mother's sisters, Roberta and Helen Finlay. She married John Reul on April 2, 1932 and they took up residence in Farmingdale, living in the same house for 50 years.
A year after her husband's death in 1985 she came to live with her daughter and son-in-law, William and Finley Plows, first in Del Mar, CA, and then in 1989 in Boulder. Although primarily a homemaker and mother, Muriel did not spend much time baking cookies. Instead she was an avid reader, painter and photographer. She enjoyed listening to classical music, especially the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin, but also was a great fan of Gilbert and Sullivan. She played the piano a bit and began playing the guitar in her 60s. In her younger years she was a strong swimmer, enjoying lengthy swims in Lake Ronkonkoma and the Atlantic Ocean. Muriel was also an avid gardener and naturalist.
During her Farmingdale days Muriel was active in Girl Scouts, volunteered for the Association for the Help of Retarded Children and walked dogs at the Bide-A-Wee Home Association. She and her husband helped maintain a wetlands property eventually donated by her aunts to the Nature Conservancy.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bill and Finley Plows of Boulder; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Julie Plows living in the San Diego area, and three great-grandchildren, Erica, Ronnie and Andrew.
No local service is planned. Her cremains will be interred at her husband's burial site on LI at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bide-A-Wee Association, 3300 Beltagh Ave., Wantagh, NY 11793 (785-4079) or to the North Shore Animal League, 25 Davis Ave., Port Washington, NY 11050 (883-7575).
