Residents headed for the polls on Tuesday to vote for town officials, members of the County Legislature, local judges and a county assessor.
In the Town of Oyster Bay, residents returned incumbent Supervisor John Venditto to a fourth term in office. Venditto, Republican, received 35,427 votes while his challenger, Democrat Alexander Sklavos, received 19,889. Town residents also voted for three of six candidates for the Oyster Bay Town Board, returning both Republican incumbents, Joseph Muscarella and Anthony Macagnone. In addition, Rose Walker, also a Republican, was voted onto the town board. Councilwoman Bonnie Eisler, Democratic incumbent, was defeated, as were Democratic candidates Gary Burke and Lawrence Weiss. The numbers were as follows: Muscarella - 31,121; Macagnone - 29,620; Walker - 29,462; Eisler - 24,545; Burke - 23,134; Weiss - 22,518.
Oyster Bay Town Clerk Martha Offerman, Democratic incumbent to the position, was defeated by challenger Steve Labriola, current assemblyman of the 12th State Assembly District. Labriola garnered 29,882 votes to Offerman's 23,975. A special election will be held early next year to fill the vacancy in the assembly.
Receiver of Taxes James Stefanich held onto his seat after going neck and neck with challenger, Republican John Canning. Stefanich, the Democratic incumbent, received 27,272 votes to Canning's 26,818.
In the Nassau County Legislature, Democrats held on to their 10-9 majority. Republican incumbent Peter Schmitt, 12th District legislator and Minority Leader, defeated Democratic challenger John Rennhack. Schmitt received 9,241 votes to Rennhack's 3,754.
Residents who live in the 14th District elected a new legislator, as incumbent Salvatore B. Pontillo did not seek re-election. Democrat Dave Mejias defeated Republican Greg Carman in a very tight race, receiving 6,106 votes to Carman's 5,725.
In the 17th Legislative District, Republican incumbent Ed Mangano defeated Democratic challenger Linda Burns-Gleason 8,348 votes to her 3,789.
Also in a very tight race this year were the two candidates for county assessor, Republican incumbent Charles O'Shea and Democrat Harvey Levinson. Levinson ultimately defeated O'Shea, receiving 107,338 votes while O'Shea received 106,102.
