After standing abandoned on Hempstead Turnpike for roughly five years, the Raven's Nest, a former adult entertainment club which was called an eyesore by community members for years, was torn down this Monday while community leaders looked on. County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi, who promised residents last week that the structure would be leveled within a week, was joined by several elected officials, OTB representatives and community activists during the demolition, including Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, Farmingdale Village Mayor Joseph Trudden, Nassau OTB President Larry Aaronson, Nassau OTB Director of Corporate Affairs William Funk, Assemblyman Steve Labriola, Councilman Joe Muscarella, Councilwoman Bonnie Eisler, Dave Mejias, Greg Carman and Rose Walker. Coaches and managers start the season early, usually around mid-March with player ratings. In one weekend, about 150 players gather at Howitt Middle School and are rated. This is when coaching strategy begins. Next comes the draft where managers and coaches handpick their teams in a draft. The manager and coach personally choose each player. The Farmingdale Wolves boys U-12 travel soccer team advanced to the fourth round in the State Cup Championships with a "Golden Goal" victory over the division-leading Hauppauge Stingrays. The goal came in the 14th minute of overtime after the game ended in a 1-1 draw. FULL STORY
