On September 5, OTH finally completed their regular season schedule, albeit somewhat later than planned with all the makeup games. Darien continued their improved play, defeating Changing Times by the score of 17-5. The victory gave Darien its 5th win in the last six games as they gear up for the year-end Charity Tournament. Tom T Ball, the heart & soul of Darien and playing with one good arm, went 4-5 with 4 RBIs. Joe "one spike, one sneaker" Manning, made a fashion statement while collecting 3 hits and 4 RBIs. Next week he will wear his other matching footwear. Joe Cipolla and Bobby Schubert rounded out the offense with 3 hits each. The comeback team of 2003, Synergy, continued their terrific season with a 15-5 win over a struggling Mers team. Synergy started slowly but finally got rolling in the 3rd when Al Devine smacked the first of his 2 triples in his 3 hit night. John Penza also contributed 3 clutch hits at key moments of the game. Synergy put Mers away completely in the 7th, scoring 7 runs, including a tremendous HR over the left center field fence by Tommy Vanasco. A solid pitching performance by rookie Dennis Oehl was backed up by key plays by Billy Fitzpatrick, Tom Vanasco and Joe Lutz. Barco continued their winning ways as well, overcoming a 10-5 deficit, edging out Moby 11-10. Barco was led by Dennis Ryan's 4-4 which included 2 doubles and a triple along with 3 RBIs. He also scored the winning run by tagging up from 2nd on Kevin Moloney's deep fly. Also contributing to their offense was a hot Dave Ringer (4-4), Bill Stack (3-3 2 RBIs) and Jeff Elie's (3-3). Another key hit was Tony Falcone's 2 RBI triple in their 5 run 6th. Other game results were Bar Boy over O'Sheas; Bethpage PT over Singletons and the J-2/M&T Tuesday game rained out.

Each year, the Over The Hill Gang Softball League plays a charity tournament for the benefit of a local organization or individual. This year's tournament is raising funds for Nicole's Hope. Nicole Caputo is a seven-year-old child suffering from cerebral trauma, which occurred when she fell into a pool at 4 years of age. Nicole is in the process of going through a series of treatments in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which has shown signs of rejuvenating cells in her brain. Since this treatment is in the experimental phase it is not covered by insurance. On October 3 the final game of the 12-team elimination contest will be played, preceded by the Homerun Derby finals between the leagues top sluggers. There will be free refreshments on hand along with raffle prizes. Please come out and enjoy the festivities and support this worthy cause. Over the next few weeks the family will be asking for the support of friends, family and business associated to help raise funds needed to give Nicole these costly treatments, which will improve her quality of life. Anyone can help by making a contribution to Nicole Caputo Foundation, LTD. Any amount donated would be greatly appreciated. The Caputo family thanks you in advance for your generosity and support.
