Representing the United States team in the World Lacrosse Championships, played at Towson Stadium in Baltimore, MD, were three outstanding athletes from Farmingdale High School. Matt Danowski, Steve Panarelli and Krista Pellizzi represented our nation and were outstanding in the tournament, which was played June 26 to July 5.
Teams sent players representing nations from all around the world, including Canada, England, South Korea, Wales, Japan, Germany, the United States, Australia and the Iroquois Nation. To qualify, a player had to be 19 years of age or younger. A team was made of men and women, who attended tryouts and were then selected for their abilities for the team. Farmingdale was the only United States High School to have three players chosen for the team. In fact, Krista was the only young lady to be selected from New York.
The United States team won the Gold Medal for both the men and women; therefore Farmingdale High School athletes received three gold medals.
Matt Danowski was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, making him the best player, under 19 years, in the world. Steve Panarelli was named the defensive player of the tournament, making him the best in the world, under 19 years, at his position. Krista Pellizzi was fourth leading scorer for the women in the tournament, while playing injured and missing one game because of injuries.
The men were picked on the All-World Team and Krista was lauded by the World Coaches for her outstanding play.
Matt will attend Duke, Steve - Syracuse, and Krista - Maryland.
