Nassau County Legislator Salvatore B. Pontillo has filed legislation with the Clerk of the Legislature mandating that the county purchase recycled motor oil for its fleet of vehicles. Re-refined motor oil uses less energy than refining motor oil from crude. This switch will also reduce the negative environmental impacts for the disposal of used motor oil.

"With the uncertain conditions of oil producing regions around the world, the county needs to take a proactive approach to conservation," said Pontillo.

According to the legislation the county will purchase recycled motor oil when the price is reasonably competitive to the price of refined motor oil.

"This legislation will most certainly not solve our pollution problems, but it is a start. I hope to see more conservation moves like this one made by Nassau County in the future," added Pontillo.
