Webster defines volleyball as a team game played by hitting a large ball back and forth over a net with the hands. Once you have the chance to view the Farmingdale High School Daler Boys Volleyball in action, you'll notice they have taken that definition and brought it to the next level. Coach Steve Messina is at the helm of this extraordinary group of individuals. "These 13 student-athletes have grown up," commented Coach Messina. "They have matured as a team tremendously." By doing so, they have given themselves a season to be proud of. They have expanded on the theory of playing as a team and have worked hard to improve on all aspects of the game," he said. The team has been able to focus for the entire match and that has brought a great degree of success. They are able to see the whole picture and use strategies they've learned to combat any particular situation.

It starts off with intense direction from this year's seniors made up of Eric Blinder, Lou Cardillo, Vin Misuraca and Lee Sommers. Junior players shore up the squad with Matt Bianco, Kris Kalender, Bryan Patterson, Greg Rose and John Schellhorn. Sensational sophomores include Gary Beggin, Dan DiCario, Paul Janoscak and Ralston Nicholas.

The team always looks for new members. There are the typical agility skills a player must possess - being able to move quickly and jump to a certain degree. Most important states Coach Messina, "is the willingness to effectively work with each other" when on the court. The focal point of any practice session involves the setter, the outside hitter and the backrow defense. They work on the quick set, the block shot and the flair of a well placed tip shot. This group has put it all together quite nicely. Dig, set, spike ... Dalers.

Eric has been a dedicated and determined player for the 2003 Varsity Boys Volleyball team. As a graduating senior this June, Eric plans to attend the University of Central Florida where he will take courses in preparation for a profession as a sports agent. He has taken his education quite seriously and ranks his debate class as a favorite along with sports marketing. "I enjoy public speaking," he argued. "And sports marketing will fit in with my intended career." He has had an active schedule throughout his years in high school as a member of DECA, which is a business-oriented club. Eric played Varsity football as the kicker and participates in travel soccer. He enjoys playing sports and roots big time for the New York Yankees. His community service includes all DECA activities, Bowlathon and numerous fundraisers. Eric has brought an "aggressive attitude, leadership and hustle" to the volleyball team. He has constantly worked on the finer points of his game in his efforts to improve on "digging and back row passing." Wondering aloud about his friends, Eric reflected on what attracted him to the sport. "Teammates Lou Cardillo and Vin Misuraca got me involved in volleyball," he stated. The rest is history. As a lifelong Daler, Eric has set the stage for success.

Coach's Corner: Eric came into the volleyball program as a junior and has quickly become a valuable member of our team. His hustle and motivation helps to jumpstart our team when it is needed.

Vin has displayed a fantastic work ethic as a member of this year's Varsity Volleyball team. He is heading to Hofstra University where he will major in business marketing. Vin has an attraction for the commerce field. "I like all business classes," he admitted. "I hope to go into business for myself one day." DECA has been very instrumental to his outlook, having been involved for the past three years. When he does get some free time, he "likes to listen to music and spend time with his friends and girlfriend." He also earned letters in soccer. Volleyball has been constant in Vin's life, having played for the past six years. "I used to love watching it on television," he said. "I feel I bring enthusiasm, leadership and skill to a game that's great to play." He has continually strived to make adjustments to his game. "I've improved my thinking and my on court actions," he explained. "My teammates and coach have helped me grow and improve in ways no one else could both on and off the court." From a Daler point of view, Vin has been a big-time hitter in more ways than one.

Coach's Corner: Vinny is an outstanding player who shows a great enthusiasm for the sport. His teammates feed off his desire to compete at a high level and win. Vinny is a powerful attacker with a strong power serve. He is also an excellent defender with accurate passing and setting skills. His commitment is one reason for the team's successful season.
