After only four years of existence, and two years after finishing dead last in Conference III, the Farmingdale High School Boys Varsity Bowling Team dominated all teams in their way en route to their first conference championship. Farmingdale defeated rivals Plainview JFK and Bethpage in several crucial matches in the final two weeks of the season to complete their championship winning season.

The opening match pitted Farmingdale against Jericho and the nervous Dalers lost the match by one point. Upset with themselves, and how the season started, Farmingdale bowled the next 11 matches of the season seemingly on a mission, and remarkably did not lose any of those matches. The result of their dominance was an 84 percent winning percentage, and 111 points. Second place Plainview JFK could barely compete, winning 67 percent of their games and finishing with 88 points.

The successful season for the Dalers was a complete team effort. Farmingdale was led by one of the best four-man teams in Nassau County with seniors Dave Diamond and Matt Traina, junior Ed Norton, and sophomore John Alves. Traina and Diamond finished second and third in the conference for high average, respectively. Traina finished with a 215.7 average while Diamond finished with a 207.2 average. Traina also had the conference high series with 768, and high game of 289. Add in Norton's 198.4 average and Alves' 190.7 average and Farmingdale had the best team average in the conference by far, almost 14 pins higher than Bethpage. The team's 813.1 average was ranked fourth in Nassau County. More astonishingly, the team sent all four bowlers to the Nassau County Individual Tournament, a tournament for bowlers with an average of 190 or higher.

The team was very successful in the Team County Tournament, and received an added boost from their Junior Varsity, which also won their conference. Junior Bryan Patterson has the JV Conference high average with a 193.2 and sophomore Kenny Seiberg finished third with a 177.4. Both competed with the varsity quartet at the Nassau County Team tournament.

The bowlers enjoyed themselves while competing against the best at the county individual tournament and, most importantly, against each other. Though Diamond and Traina will be graduating, Patterson and Seibert should be fine replacements for next year's varsity team. With the experience of Norton and Alves leading the way, this year's conference championship has potential to be one of many. Congratulations to the entire team and head coach Liz Murphy for their outstanding accomplishment.
