Animals are cute and cuddly creatures and what better way to spread yuletide cheer than to give your loved one a wide-eyed bundle of joy? Although animals, especially young ones, are loveable, pets are a life long commitment. It may seem that you've heard this before but every year the huge influx of unwanted animals that turn up in shelters in the months just following the holiday season continues.

Puppies require approximately four trips to the veterinarian in their first four months. As you pet grows older yearly health exams and vaccinations are essential to ensure your pet lives a long, healthy life. Other costs to consider include neutering, grooming, and in many cities, licensing. In addition to medical concerns, your pet also needs to be provided with a warm sheltered place to sleep, regular meals and exercise.

Choosing the right pet for your family is the fist step. Considerations should include whether a dog or cat would better suit your family's lifestyle and needs. Cats often require less supervision, but kittens can tend to scratch and play on furniture. Large breed dogs need plenty of room to exercise so they may not be suitable to those who live in apartments or small houses. In addition, young puppies need several hours of attention daily and training to ensure a well-behaved adult.

Speaking to your veterinarian about your wants, needs and expectations can help. Your veterinarian can give invaluable advice not only about keeping any potential pet healthy but also about any special needs that may go along with owning specific pedigreed breeds. Many purebreds require specific care or grooming.

Whether you decide to purchase a pet or adopt from a shelter you should always choose animals that are bright-eyed and lively and avoid those that act lethargic or aggressive.

There is no doubt that having a pet can enrich your life, providing companionship and unconditional love, but unless you or the owner is prepared for the long-term responsibility that comes with owning a pet, a gift certificate may be more appreciated in the end.
