The Farmingdale Historic Plaque Program recognizes homes within the village built prior to 1940 that have historic or architectural significance. The most recent home selected is located at 31 Rose Street and was once owned by Christopher and Carolyn Beierling.

Christopher and Carolyn Beierling were well-known Farmingdale residents. Christopher was a builder who built a number of houses in Farmingdale including the former Enricht-Eagon house located at the intersection of Secatogue Avenue and Melville Road. He served as the Farmingdale Fire Chief in the 1930s. His wife Carolyn was a fourth-grade school teacher for 47 years serving under Weldon E. Howitt. She taught a number of generations of Farmingdale residents, including Deputy Village Mayor Dr. Benjamin Giminaro. The Beierling's home at 31 Rose Street was built in 1917, shortly after their marriage.

Mr. Beierling's family immigrated to the United States from Germany. The original family house was built in 1846 and stood at 45 Grand Avenue, next door to the 31 Rose Street property. The original basement is part of the current house at 45 Grant and dates to 1846. The cistern that the house's wooden gutters flowed into, as well as an old pump, are still there.

Christopher Beierling lived at 31 Rose Street until his death in 1958. Carolyn lived in the house until 1980 when she died at the age of 90. George Bombard, the current owner, purchased the house in 1981. He had lived in the apartment at 45 Grant Street and he became a good friend to Mrs. Beierling. The exterior of the building is a craftsman-style house. It, like the interior of the home, is meticulously cared for. The craftsmanship that Christopher Beierling put into the house 85 years ago is still very much intact. The home is further enhanced by the large garden of annuals and perennials Mr. Bombard maintains.

One enters the house through a full front porch with a beaded board ceiling. The first room is a large living room with an exposed beam ceiling. The hardwood floors are trimmed with four different types of wood - oak, walnut, maple and cherry. The great architectural elements in the living room include built-in bookcases with leaded glass, large moldings, wooden pillars and a large fireplace as well as a bay window with a sill that is covered with four different types of wood. One then enters the dining room through wooden pillars and built-in bookcases. The dining room has a unique three window design. Most of the windows in the house have been replaced but some of the original glass windows can still be found.

The exposed beam ceiling continues into the dining room. The care with which Mr. Beierling constructed this home is evident. Even though the house is 85 years old, thanks to the preservation work of Mr. Bombard, it looks like it was recently built. It is proof that when properly cared for, quality craftsmanship lasts. Mr. Bombard's favorite room is the den, which was added in 1987. The upstairs has three rooms with large plank oak floors. The closets have windows.

It is through the efforts of people like Mr. Bombard that Farmingdale gets its unique character. Farmingdale residents can be grateful to him for his efforts to preserve the home of one of Farmingdale's well-known and respected families, as well as his dedication to preserve the character of the community. It is that kind of effort that ensures Farmingdale is a great place to live.
