  • Sports: News From the Farmingdale Rebels

    Lofty goals had been set. The pressure was on. Not only from their opponents, but also from within. The Farmingdale Rebels, a girl's U9 soccer team, had other things on their minds aside from winning, Goal number one. Avenge an earlier loss to a tough team from Dix Hills. Goal number two. Win a third consecutive championship at the Columbus weekend tournament, thus becoming the first team from Farmingdale to three-peat at a particular venue. The bar had been set. What time was it?" It was Go time. Huntington was the sight of the Labor Day tournament. Two games on Saturday were handled rather routinely as the Rebels won both games defeating teams from Deer Park and Elwood. Sunday was the test. Dix Hills had come to play but so had the Rebels. it was a very exciting and well-played game. A tight match until the end when the Rebels exploded for two goals winning the game 2-0. Northport was next. They gave us quite a battle, but the team rose to the occasion, winning the game 1-0. the Rebels had won their very first Labor Day tournament. Goal number one was complete. The Columbus weekend tournament was next. Teams from Patchogue, New Hyde Park and West Islip would succumb to the Rebels onslaught. Scoring a total of 10 goals while giving up only one ensured the Rebels their third straight championship at the East Islip event.   • Sports: Mers Double Champs in Over The Hill Softball League

    Mers Ale House concluded the 2002 Over The Hill Gang softball league regular season as the champion of the top rated American League with a 10-2-1 record. This earned Mers the number one seeding in the annual end of the season league tournament. FULL STORY
