Madelon P. Baulknight, of Belpre, OH, died Sept. 9, 2002 at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Ohio. In May of this year, she was in a serious automobile accident and was hospitalized since then as her health deteriorated due to the accident and complications of diabetes. She was the widow of Dr. Charles Baulknight and lived in Bethpage for nearly 40 years. Dr. Baulknight, with advanced degrees in chemistry and physics was recruited by Grumman in the early '60s and was instrumental in helping expand Grumman's space program. He specialized in fuels which powered the lunar module's first takeoff from the moon and earth-reentry.
Mrs. Baulknight was a very active member of the Levittown First Presbyterian Church from the first week of her arrival on LI, having served there as a Ruling Elder on the Session, a Deacon, a member of the Women's Society, on various church committees and always sang in the choir. She was employed for many years by Avis World Headquarters and also by the Federal Government in Washington, DC, prior to her marriage.
She was active in the PTA of the Walford School in Garden City. She and Dr. Baulknight were both active in the NC Democratic Party. She was a member of the NC Youth Board and worked in an advisory capacity with county-wide groups of youth seeking to unify young people across racial and religious lines.
Mrs. Baulknight was born Jan. 2, 1921 in Belpre to Clara Anna Dalton Pryor. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Parkersburg, WV, the Belpre Senior Citizens, the Belpre Historical Society and the Belpre Women's Club. She enjoyed the Smoot Theater in Marietta, various cultural events at Marietta College. Here in NY, she enjoyed the opera at Tilles Center and traveled extensively in recent years in Europe and Israel.
She is survived by one son, Jeffrey Baulknight of Japan; three grandchildren; also by her sister-in-law, Leola Baulknight of South Carolina; and numerous first cousins, including Jim and Shirley Pryor, her primary caregivers in the last months of her illness; Donna Johnson, Beman and Helen Flowers also of Belpre; George Flowers and Darwin and Jean Mayle of Marietta; Irma Harris and Ken and Velma Striblin of Cleveland; Juanita Henderson of Philadelphia; and Mabel Marshall and Walter Stevens of California. Burial was in Rockland Cemetery in Belpre.
