On July 20, a team of 12-year-old baseball players from Farmingdale, Massapequa, Massapequa Park and Wantagh traveled to Cooperstown to participate in skill competitions and a tournament. With only the two previous baseball games under their hat as the St. Killian's Yankees, the players were able to post a tournament record of five and two. This outstanding record can be attributed to the motivational talks and coaching skills of Dave Critelli, Bruce Burnett and George O'Malley. Each received a commemorative ring for their hard earned work and inspiration for their great play from Dave Lemanczyk, former major league pitcher, with whom they posed for a picture.
The summer FABL season for the determined Yankees was even more successful. Entering the playoffs with a winning record in the east, the team forged ahead and finished the playoffs in the 12-Year-Old Division with a 4-0 record. This placed the Yankees, one of 18 teams in the east and west divisions, in first going into the championship game. After a disappointing loss to the second place team, the Yankees were crowned co-champions of the 12-year-old division.
Throughout the season, each of the Yankee's contributed to the success of the team with their pitching, fielding and batting skills. At times battling back from a deficit, the players never ever lost faith in themselves or more importantly in their fellow team members. During the season if a team member was in a batting slump or made a fielding error his teammates would show their support with an inspirational glance or pat on the back. The members of the St. Kilian's Yankees for the 2002 FABL summer baseball season were: Chris Brosnan, Chris Brezinski, Danny Burnett, Thomas Carlson, Dave Critelli, Sean Donovan, Danny Fisher, Jimmy Hogan, Michael Imbriano, Joe McDermott, Benny Mihalik, John Ninivaggi, and Ryan O'Malley. It was a pleasure to watch the spirit of these boys at play.
