Mary McCollum Forbes, 81, of Clayton, NY, died on Sept. 3, 2002, at Samaritan Keep Home where she had resided since January 18, 2000. Mrs. Forbes, wife of Dr. George W. Forbes (Married March 28, 1959 at the Presbyterian Church of Aberdeen, MD), retired superintendent of Thousand Island's Central School, was born Nov. 27, 1920 in Lock Haven, PA, daughter of the late John and Helen Irvin McCollum. She is also survived by an AFS son and his wife, Ilhami and Nurdan Ozturk of Bursa, Turkey; a niece and her husband, Ann and Jim Elliott of Camp Hill, PA; and two grandnieces and one grand-nephew. A sister, Marguerite Davis of Wellsboro, PA, predeceased her.
Mary Forbes received a BS in education from Lock Haven State Teachers College, now Lock Haven State University in 1941. She received her master's degree in reading education from Penn State University in 1945. She took additional graduate work at Duke University, the University of Maryland, Teachers College of Columbia University, LIU and Syracuse University.
She taught in Coudersport, PA, from 1941 to 1944. While at Penn State she was a graduate assistant in the University Reading Clinic. She was a reading specialist for the Baltimore, MD, City School District from 1945 to 1955, living in Baltimore. During the summers from 1946 to 1952 she taught reading courses in the summer sessions at St. Lawrence University. During the summer sessions of 1953 and 1954 she taught reading courses at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA. For the summer of 1955 she was an associate editor in the elementary division of Houghton Mifflin Book Company, Boston, MA.
From 1955 to 1961 she was reading supervisor for the Farmingdale Public Schools. From 1961 to 1964 she was assistant principal at Northside Elementary School in the Farmingdale school district. In the summer of 1956 she was an instructor in the Intensive Teacher Training Program at the State University College at Potsdam. From 1966 to 1972 she was associate professor, supervising student teachers, for the State University College at Potsdam.
From 1972 to 1976 she was the elementary principal at Alexandria Central School. From 1976 to 1982 she was part-time public relations director and editor of Hospital Happening at Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay. In 1980 she was an adjunct instructor teaching a course, Writing and Editing Newsletters, at Jefferson Community College. From 1982-84 she was a part-time elementary consultant at LaFargeville Central School. During this same period she was part-time editor of Lifestyles, a healthcare newsletter for the A.W. Lawrence Co., Schenectady. From 1984 to 1991 she served as part-time co-executive secretary for the Jefferson Community College Foundation. From 1984 to 1992 she was part-time editor of Jeff-Lewis Network, the newsletter of the Jefferson-Lewis School Boards Association.
In 1991 she was adjunct professor at State University College at Potsdam teaching a course, Writing Across the Curriculum, grades K to 12. In 1993-94 she and her husband prepared an Efficiency Study for the NYS Education Dept. entitled "Alternate Ways to Share Instructional Programs Among Participating School Districts - Hammond, Heuvelton Lisbon, Morristown and Ogdensburg." She served as reading workshop consultant in Gouveneur, Ogdensburg, Massena, LaFargeville, Sackets Harbor and Jasper-Troupsburg School Districts.
Mrs. Forbes was a member of the Clayton Travellers Club, for which she served as president. She was an active member of the Clayton Methodist Church serving on several boards and being the representative to the Clayton Council of Churches. She was a founding member of the Clayton Chapter, AFS, now the Thousand Islands Chapter, and with her husband, served as regional representative for AFS in Northern NY. She was co-chairman of judging for the annual Clayton Christmas parade. She as a member of the Black River Reading Council, International Reading Association, American Association of University Women, College Women's Club of Jefferson County and was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association.
