The Sons of Italy-Columbus Lodge #2143's Anthony "the Big Sausage" Curran continued his assault on various Long Island softball leagues as he belted his 26th and 27th home runs of the season. "That is an incredibly high number of home runs," said power hitting outfielder Jeff Steinberg. The home runs added to Curran's Columbus Lodge single season home run record. The bitter/sweet day ended with a 19-18 loss to the Knights.

In the first inning, Columbus Lodge members attacked the Knights for 4-runs. But the persistent Knights banged out 12-runs over the next two innings to take a 12-4 lead. The Lodge members returned the favor by scratching for 3-runs in the third and erupted for 7-runs in the fourth, including a 3-run Curran blast (his 26th) over the leftfield's head, to take a 14-12 lead. "The thing I like about our team is we don't quit," said Curran.

The Knights continued to show the mark of a champion as the banged out 5-runs in the fifth inning and 2-runs in the sixth to regain the lead, 19-14. In the bottom of the sixth, Golden Lions Dave Saviano, (who's 3-hits raised his batting average to .684), double to right field and scored on a single by Dennis Tranchina. It was the 61st time Saviano has scored this season, which established a new Columbus Lodge single season record for runs scored.

The Columbus Lodge members picked up 2-more runs and headed into the final inning down 19-17. After two quick outs, the Big Sausage came up to the plate and connected on his 27th home run of the season. The Lions got the potential tying run on base before the final out was registered. Chris Curran, who has been hobbled all season with a leg injury, singled in three at-bats.

The Columbus Lodge #2143, located behind the Stuart Thomas Manor on Boundry Avenue in So. Farmingdale, is a member of the Order Sons of Italy in America, a not-for-profit fraternal organization.
