Undefeated Mers Ale House pulled out a thrilling victory against Barboy in the last inning to win their seventh victory by the score of 14-13. George Cohan had one of the best nights at bat that has been seen in the league this year. Cohan went 4-4 with 5 RBIs and added 3 monster home runs over the right center field fence. It was an awesome display. Rich Lewis and Joe Fanning went 3-3 while Joe Girimonte and Bill Sutherland went 3-4. Bodine, Tim Fitzpatrick, Tom Vella, and Ed Healy all went 2-3. Sutherland and Byron Bodine each added 2 RBIs. Mers faces Singleton's this week and the winner of that game will take over sole possession of first place in the top American League conference.
M&T pounded out 29 hits including 2 home runs by Tom Arcuri and one by Nat Corraro in defeating Synergy 15-7. Both players also had 3 RBIs each. John Cardile and Vince Cardulo came up big with a multi-hit and RBI game.
Maybe it was the rained-out tournament or that there was a Tiger loose in Bethpage last week that might have sparked this team. With some outstanding fielding and muscle from Hal Edelmann, 5-5, 2 homers and 7 RBIs, Butch Flecker, 4-4, Ed "the legend" Bernauer going 4-5 and Jerry Sutherland, 4-5 with a triple, J-Two went on to defeat Moby Drugs 24-21. Dave Connolly and Eric Pietzak both 3-4 and other timely hits, which kept key innings going, may have turned this team's season around. We'll wait for next week to see if we can make it two in a row.
Injuring ridden Moby Drugs' placed 3 players on IR and comes up short losing to J-Two by the score of 24-21. Moby managed 25 hits (25-44) but could not come back from 3-Two's scoring 12 runs in the sixth inning.
Barco improved to 5-2 with a win over Darien, 30-14, breaking open a close game with a 14-run 8th. Barco had a ton of offensive support (Gary Jambor, Tom Burke, Terry McPartland, Dave Ringer, Bill White et al), as well as homers from Dennis Ryan and a monster shot from Kevin Moloney. Rick "Twinkle Toes" Pedone demonstrated nice footwork at 2nd and was heard to say, "At least I caught the ball." Just more material for Terry's post-game routine. Dennis thanks you.
Friday's late game had Singletons defeating undermanned Changing Times 25-14. Singletons built an early 23-5 lead before Changing Times bats went to work in the 7th and 8th innings to close the gap. The victory moves Big Reds record to 7-0 and sets the stage for next weeks 8:20 showdown with 7-0 Mers Pub. This weeks offense was led by Benny Alberto 5-5, 3 RBIs, Bob Davis and Tommy (Tino) Sorrentino both 4-5, 5 RBIs each, and Paul Canalattos going 3-4. Contributing with 2 hits apiece were Tom (Satch) Camarda, Frank Gordon, Bob D'amico, Tom Callahan and Rich Cirillo and of course Richie Smindaks 3 walks!!!
For Changing Times, who did play shorthanded in a loss to Singletons by the score of 24-14, Bill Condon went 4-5 and Billy Wahl and John Hughes each had homers.
Morgan B's evened their record at 4-4 by beating a tough Granny O'Sheas team by the score of 17-13. The feature of the night was a home run by Bob Ceriello to stun the crowd. Bob also got three hits for the night. Also going downtown were Richie Dargie and rookie Tom Vanasco. Frankie "Hitman" Ortolani continued to show the young guys how to hit with three hits as did Joe "I never tasted a beer I didn't like" Lutz, and Larry Lembo.
The highlight for Granny O'Shea's was Bruce Kubart's grand slam that put them ahead of Morgan B's 7-6 before going down to defeat 17-13 in a hard-fought game.
We would like to express our sympathy to the Nolan family in the passing of Brien Nolan and to the family of Jim Reilly in the passing of his niece Dawn Swaringen. Dawn was 31 and expecting a baby when she was taken from us by leukemia.
For the next two or three weeks, all reports should be e-mailed to Gary Jambor at gtj707@yahoo.com. Gary has been nice enough to take the reins for a couple of weeks so I can spend some time with my family in PA.
