The Farmingdale Wolves Boys' U-10 travel soccer team captured second place in the Massapequa Memorial Day Soccer Tournament, with a record of 3-1-1.

While the boys' first game resulted in a heartbreaker of a loss, the Wolves came back with a vengeance, outplaying the remaining four teams they faced during the rest of the competition. The team's defense - led by goalies Matthew Ward and Joseph Kennedy - shut down their opponents, allowing only one goal during the last four games. Wolves defenders Peter Badalamente, Robert Godas and Peter Thompson formed a virtual wall the other teams' offensive lines just couldn't penetrate, returning the ball time and again to the Wolves' side of the field, where the team's midfielders and forwards made the most of it.

During their second game, the Wolves defeated the Albertson Atomics, 6 - 1, with midfielder Thomas Esposito leading the team in scoring with four goals, off assists by Zachary Wetzel and Brandon Veracka. Veracka and forward Cody Chuchul scored the remaining two goals, resulting in the team's decisive victory.

Two spectacular shutouts followed. Outstanding shooting by Wetzel, who scored four goals during the Wolves' 8 - 0 victory of the Hewlett-Lawrence Blue Bull Dogs was a highlight of the third game, as were two goals scored by Veracka. A seventh goal by Kennedy, followed by a goal by Christopher Pendergast, proved that the Wolves offense was just about unstoppable during the game.

The Wolves' "unstoppable streak" continued into their fourth game, when they defeated the Northport-Cow Harbor X-Men, 4 - 0. Forward Jonathan Lyons started the scoring streak late in the first half with his goal, which was followed by goals by Ward, Veracka and Esposito.

The team stayed tough - and hung on to their second place finish -- during their final game against the All American All Stars. While the game, which resulted in a 0 - 0 tie, was a rough one, the boys displayed their sportsmanship, character and skill throughout, and proved that they were winners - in every sense of the word.

Coaches Peter Chuchul and Chris Pendergast congratulate all the Wolves on their outstanding teamwork during the tournament and thank the parents for giving up their holiday weekends to come out and support the boys.
