This past Sunday, May 19, the Farmingdale Titans, a girls' U-10 travel team, played the Scarsdale Raiders in the quarterfinals of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association State Cup. The Titans beat the Raiders 2-0, allowing them to proceed in the tournament. The Titans have made it further along in the state cup competition than any Farmingdale girls' travel team in the "open" division. The "open" division is open to all teams in an age bracket. However, all division 1 and 2 teams must compete in the "open" division.
The Scarsdale Raiders came into the quarterfinal match as the number one-rated team in Westchester and undefeated in spring play. The Titans were ready for a tough match and started the game in high gear. Thirty-one seconds into the game, defender Meghan Campbell hit left halfback Samantha Baum with a pass and Sam drove the ball into the Scarsdale offensive zone. Sam then created space and crossed the ball into the middle of the field where striker Kayla Mueger buried it in the back of the net.
The rest of the first half the Titans moved the ball around to create a few opportunities, but were unable to score. The defense did a good job of keeping the Scarsdale team outside the 14-yard box and all shots were swallowed up by the Titan goalie Lauren Berlingo.
The second half was similar to the first half until about the 14-minute mark when Mueger back passed to Tara Coyle, who crushed the ball into the goal for a 2-0 lead. The Raiders had one good scoring opportunity in the last 10 minutes of the game, but goalie Berlingo made a spectacular dive to take the ball away from a Scarsdale player.
The whole team did a great job and everyone is proud of them. Playing defense was Meghan Campbell, Lisa Campbell, Toni Roulet, Sarah Mulcahy and Jen Hults. In the midfield the Titans used Cassandra Beggen, Coyle, Baum and Meghan Milana. As strikers the team had Mueger and Jaime Hart. And in goal was Berlingo.
The Titans will play their semifinal match on June 2 against a still-to-be determined opponent. The State Cup Championships will be played over the weekend of June 15 and 16 upstate in Clifton Park, NY.
