Stop World Hunger, Inc. is welcoming tennis players to its 22nd year of tennis activities. Since the summer of 1981, more than $67,000 has been raised to help feed and nourish hungry children throughout the world.
First up will be a tennis party benefit on Saturday evening, March 16, at Carefree Racquet and Health Club in North Merrick. The cost is $15 for players and $5 for non-players. All players are guaranteed two hours of playing time and light refreshments will be served.
The main fund-raiser for the season will be the Annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament. Players from all ability levels across Long Island will take part in a no elimination, round-robin tournament. Different divisions are set up taking into account the ability levels of the players, as well as their geographic locations. The tennis matches are scheduled at mutually agreeable times and sites. Special awards are presented to the top finishers in each division.
The cost for the tournament is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles. All entry fees and donations will be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to provide assistance where the need is greatest regardless of race, religion and/or nationality.
Registration deadline is Monday, March 25. All matches are to be played between April 1 and June 10. Awards will be presented at a special tennis party scheduled for June.
