Just wanted to thank Ken Ulric (Let's Start Fresh, Feb. 15) for his input on standardized testing and the loss it causes for the fundamental education of our children. I grew up in the Farmingdale school district and now live in Littleton, Colorado. Our state-sponsored C-sap testing has our teachers so focused on standardized testing that the joys of education (current events, field trips, open discussions, etc.) are placed a distant second.
Teachers are feeling a gun to their heads to make sure their students score consistently high on these tests no matter at what level a student is performing. This type of education squashes the creativity of teachers and students alike.
It seems to me that the administration of any school district would place more importance on the student as an individual and not be treated as another digit to calculate the score when testing is through.
