Stephen M. Cholewka, 83, died on Jan. 15, 2002. He was a WWII Coast Guard veteran serving from 1941 to 1946. He was a retired 29-year employee of Grumman Aerospace. He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Julia; his brothers, John, Samuel and Michael; sister, Dorothy; and son-in-law, Terrance Mulligan. He is survived by his daughter Julia "Nina" Mulligan; and granddaughter, Christina Mulligan, both of Virginia Beach, VA. Arrangements were made by the Arthur F. White Funeral Home. Robert N. Jonassen, 69, Pro Am Director of the Lighpath LI Senior PGA Classic, and a retired Grumman Project Engineer, died Jan. 19, 2002, of melanoma cancer at Sloan-Kettering in NYC.
An enthusiastic supporter of golf, Mr. Jonassen had been involved in Senior PGA events on LI since 1993. He was a member of the Southward Ho Country Club, president of the SoHo Seniors and a member of the LI Senior Golf Association. Mr. Jonassen worked for the Grumman Corporation in Bethpage for 30 years, where he was part of the Apollo Lunar Module (LEM) Project and assistant to the director of Engineering Test Operations. He was an Eagle Scout, a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School and the University of Southern California. Mr. Jonassen flew for the US Navy from 1954 to 1959, serving in the Mediterranean aboard the aircraft carriers USS Antietam and USS Wasp during the Suez and Lebanon crises in 1956 and 1958. He retired from the Naval Air Reserve in 1978 as lieutenant commander USNR.
Mr. Jonassen was a resident of Farmingdale for 42 years. He was a member of the Bethpage Masonic Lodge for 30 years; Master of the Lodge in 1980 and District Deputy Grand Master of the Second Nassau District in 1987. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, the Philalethes Society, National Sojourners and a Shriner.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of 44 years; two daughters, Gail Cavello of Farmingdale, a member of the music faculty at Nassau Community College, and Dianne Johnson of Narberth, PA, director of corporate development at the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia; four grandchildren, Rachel, Evan, Margit and Lindsay; and a sister, Doris Lister of Baldwin.
A memorial service was held at the Farmingdale United Methodist Church on Jan. 27. Military service and cremation private. Donations may be made to the Dr. Hwu/Melanoma Research Fund, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY, or Schneider Children's Hospital, New Hyde Park.
Elsie Clair Phillips (nee Remsen) died on Jan. 20, 2002. She was predeceased in 1997 by her husband Benjamin. Mother of Kenneth Phillips, Claire Hodkinson and the late Benjamin. Grandmother of six.
