All Town of Oyster Bay residents interested in providing the town with their discarded Christmas trees for the 14th annual Dune Stabilizing Program can drop them off at the town's Solid Waste Disposal Complex, Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road, Old Bethpage, between Wednesday, Jan. 2, and Wednesday, Jan. 16, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto.
"Most people find it hard to believe a Christmas tree can be replanted," Venditto said. "But, in the Town of Oyster Bay, discarded trees get 'planted' every January at Tobay Beach as part of the town's ongoing dune stabilization program. By 'planting' them strategically along the dune line at Tobay Beach, they help protect the dunes from erosion and actually help enlarge the dunes by catching blowing and drifting sand."
The supervisor noted that trees can be dropped off 24 hours a day. There will be a special bin outside the entrance to the Solid Waste Disposal Complex for the trees.
Venditto also reminded residents that the 14th annual Dune Stabilization Program is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, beginning at 10 a.m. Volunteers will join town officials and town crews in planting trees and dune grass. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Department of Public Works, Environmental Control Division, at 677-5853.
