Farmingdale public schools administrators, teachers, students and parents dedicated the new wing of Woodward Parkway Elementary School to 45-year veteran educator Murray Cantor, who retired this past June leaving a legacy of wisdom tempered by kindness. In attendance for the dedication, along with Cantor and his entire family, were Board of Education President Anthony Vitale, Superintendent Dr. Roberta Gerold and WP Principal Anita Solovey.
Solovey spoke of how beloved Cantor has become, in the community as well as in the district, referring to him as "a man who has meant as much to the children of Farmingdale as anyone in the 97-year history of this town." She then called upon him to unveil the sign over the entrance to the wing, explaining that the addition "will guarantee his name will be as much a part of this building as his enduring legacy of great work on behalf of the children."
Cantor began his career in education in 1956, when Woodward Parkway first opened its doors. Fresh from Hunter College, he began as a science teacher at the school, then made his way up to dean of students. Inevitably he moved into the position from which he retired last June - assistant principal.
