Farmingdale High School students are rehearsing the Broadway musical Pippin by Stephen Schwartz, composer of Godspell, The Prince of Egypt, and Disney's Pocahontas. Pippin is the story of a young man's quest for a fulfilling life. The story is told by a band of players who incorporate into the show the medieval setting of Pippin's life and the rock/pop revolution of the '70s.
Pippin is the son of Charlemagne, the 9th-century emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The young prince sets foot on the outside world searching for complete fulfillment. In his search, he valiantly decides to become a soldier. He joins his father's campaign but soon realizes that the experience wasn't what he thought it would be. He then visits his grandmother, who gives him some "wise" advice. But Pippin finds out that her advice wasn't so wise after all as Pippin's father is up to his usual business of slaying thousands. As Pippin continues his search, he dabbles in war, women, politics and love. The show is filled with comedy, bawdy characters, and magical but dark situations. The pop-rock score includes the soul-driven opener "Magic to Do", the soaring "Corner of the Sky," the lovely ballad "With You" and the romping "No Time at All". The original show won five Tony Awards, including one for Bob Fosse's direction and choreography.
Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for students; Senior citizens are given free tickets at the box office or by calling 752-6600 and reserving tickets. Performances are Friday, Nov.16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m.
