As many members of the Farmingdale community have brought to our attention, there was a bit of confusion in regard to the column "A Look at Farmingdale's Past," which can be found on page three of our paper each week.
The Sept. 28 issue featured an article written back in 1994 about Weldon E. Howitt, after whom the Howitt Middle School was named in the 1950s following his retirement as principal.
The information used in this article was taken directly from a speech which ran in our newspaper in July of 1994, and at that time the Farmingdale school system was in service for 180 years and also at that time no other building had been named after an individual.
A few years later, when East Memorial Mill Lane Principal Stanley D. Saltzman passed away in 1998, the elementary school was renamed to Stanley D. Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School.
The reason the article omitted this information was only because it was written prior to the naming. In addition, the article dealt strictly with Mr. Howitt and not the Farmingdale School system.
Out of respect to the Saltzman community, We extend our apologies for any confusion this misunderstanding may have caused and hope that members of that community realize that this was not done intentionally. Both schools, like all the schools in the district, have a special place and are equally important throughout the community.
