Mary Elliot Gallick, a Wild Irish Rose, a longtime resident of Farmingdale, died peacefully on Oct. 3, 2001, in her 82nd year. She was a WWII veteran (USWAC), retired real estate broker.
Mary Gallick grew up in the South Bronx, the second daughter of immigrants from Limerick and Liverpool. Of her six siblings, four served in WWII. Mary herself was educated in NYC parochial schools and enlisted in the Women's Army Corps at the start of the war. As a WAC she was stationed mainly in Fort Benning, GA, where her primary duty was assisting the Catholic chaplain. In that role she was the stand-in bride for countless proxy weddings, enabling soldiers to marry their faraway sweethearts before shipping out for combat in Europe and the Pacific.
As a young postwar bride she and her husband were among the first families to reside in Levittown, the pioneering housing development on LI. By 1949, however, they had settled permanently in Farmingdale, where she raised four children and was active in community affairs including the Farmingdale Women's Club.
A devout Roman Catholic all her life, she led her family on a pilgrimage to the Quebec Shrine of St. Anne de Beaupre, a patron saint of mothers, in 1954. Her prayers were answered and she gave birth to her fourth child, Paul, the following year.
For many years she was a real estate broker with the Gregory Sosa Agency in Farmingdale, retiring to spend more time with her husband, Joseph Paul, after his retirement from the NC Police Dept. Together they traveled extensively until his death in 1994.
She is survived by her children, Sarah, Nora, Brian and Paul; daughters-in-law Janice and Phylis; and grandchildren, Grace, Lillian, Nicholas and Colleen.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the NC Police Benevolent Association Widows and Orphans Fund, 89 E. Jericho Tpke., Mineola, NY 11501.
