Dave Mejias, candidate for the Nassau County Legislature in the 14th District, won the Independence Party primary over incumbent Salvatore Pontillo and Rosemary Styne. Mejias, who launched a concentrated campaign as a write-in candidate, won by a wide margin over his opponents.

"The people sent their message. They don't want or need another machine politician who puts party bosses ahead of the people of Nassau County," said Mejias. "I will be an independent voice for change."
