Bethpage Cemetery Cleanup Underway
Members of the Bethpage Cemetery Restoration Committee have been hard at work cleaning up the cemetery's grounds in recent months with the assistance of Butch Starkie and his garden/landscaping company, Starkie Brothers, as well as the Town of Oyster Bay, who have told committee members that they will have workers come in and maintain the grounds on a timely basis.

The owner of JP's Steakhouse, a newly renovated and recently reopened restaurant on Main Street in Farmingdale, Joe Brandine, has two philosophies when it comes to running a restaurant. The first, he said, is providing his customers with good food at reasonable prices and the second, which he believes is more important, is doing so in a clean environment, guaranteeing his customers safety and cleanliness.

Dave Mejias Wins Independence Party Primary
Dave Mejias, candidate for the Nassau County Legislature in the 14th District, won the Independence Party primary over incumbent Salvatore Pontillo and Rosemary Styne. Mejias, who launched a concentrated campaign as a write-in candidate, won by a wide margin over his opponents.

16th Annual Ocean to Sound Relay Honors New York's Bravest
One hundred teams of eight runners each toed the starting line at the 16th annual Ocean to Sound Relay at Jones Beach State park on Sunday morning, Sept. 23, and 97 of them survived the 50-mile journey to cross the finish line at Fireman's Field in Oyster Bay many hours later.

New Island Hospital Second Annual Run/Walk a Success
On Sept. 9, New Island Hospital held its Second Annual 5K Run/Walk at Bethpage State Park. This year the event was a proud participant in the 2001 Long Island Track and Field FILA Cross Country Challenge. There were more than 160 participants at this event, including 28 runners from the Rolling Thunder Special Needs Program, Inc. based in Ronkonkoma. The hospital sends many thanks to their event sponsor, MDNY Healthcare, Inc., and other sponsors, including the Chamber of the Commerce of the Massapequas.
