Farmingdale runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes of all ages and levels are invited to join in the fun on Saturday, Sept. 8 for the second annual Fly With the Angels Run, over a fast, flat four mile course that starts and finishes at Nassau County's Bay Park in East Rockaway.
The four mile run will start promptly at 9:15 a.m. and will be preceded at 8:45 a.m. by the Junior Angels quarter mile fun run for youngsters.
Residents are invited to join the race and the "lunch by the bay" that follows, which includes all you can eat barbecue with all the trimmings that is free to all participants and volunteers. Anybody who prefers not to run in the race may join the barbecue for only $5. There will also be a big raffle with a grand prize of a night in Manhattan, featuring show tickets, hotel room and limo. Every entrant in the run is automatically entered in the raffle.
The entire net proceeds of the run will be turned over to the Aneurysm Network for Grants, Education and Loving Support (ANGELS), for the benefit of victims of brain aneurysm and their families. It was created as a legacy for and a tribute to Josephine Visconti, who died on Jan. 23, 1999, from complications of a brain aneurysm. The ANGELS foundation is dedicated, as Visconti was, to helping people. The key mission of the ANGELS is to be a liaison between brain aneurysm patients, their families and their needs. The 2001 edition of the "Fly With the Angels Run" will be dedicated to the memory of Rob Attanasio, who died of a brain aneurysm shortly before the inaugural run in 2000.
This year's run will once again be administered by the Greater Long Island Running Club, with the technical directions supplied by David Katz of Fine Line Road Race Technicians. ANGELS President Darlene Ragone will serve as race director. Congressman Peter King has graciously agreed to serve as honorary chairman of the race committee.
The entry fee is $17 for those who preregister and $20 for registering the day of the run. Entries for the fun run are $6 preregistered and $7 on the day of the run. A top quality commemorative shirt will be given to each entrant in the four mile run and all youngsters finishing the fun run will receive a special medal when they cross the finish line.
Awards will be given to the top male and female finisher overall, and the top three male and top three female finishers in several age groups, ranging from 15 to 75 and over. Awards will also be presented to the top three male and female wheelchair competitors, the top three male and female open and masters racewalkers and the top three male and female finishers in each of two "Clydesdale" weight divisions; 185-199 pounds plus for the men and 140-159 pounds and 160 plus for the women.
This race is anticipated to be a pleasant morning directly along the shoreline in a very pretty part of Long Island for a very important cause.
