Nearly 500 women participated in the July 14 edition of the Vytra Women's 5 Kilometer Health Run in Farmingdale. This year marked the 18th year of the run, part of the KeySpan Grand Prix of Long Island road races, which benefits local charities.

The race began at 9 a.m., starting and finishing at Farmingdale High School. Catherine Ndereba of Kenya completed the race in just over 15 minutes, setting a new race record and beating US Olympian Anne Marie Letko's 1991 record by five seconds.
Four of the top finishers were from Kenya, with Rachel Sauder of Auburn, AL scoring as the first American scoring fourth overall. Farmingdale resident Donna McMahon finished as the third Long Island runner and won the Paul Wunderlich Memorial Award as the first Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) member to cross the finish line. Farmingdale resident Patty Zebersky took second place honors in the 45-49 age group and Mary Anne Goldman, who scored second in the 50-54 age group finished the race in just over 23 minutes.
The GLRIC wishes to thank members of the Town of Oyster Bay Board, especially Supervisor John Venditto and Councilmen Leonard Symons and Angelo Delligatti for supporting the event with their presence. They also thank the Farmingdale School District and the custodial staff at the high school for making the logistics of the event much easier and to all volunteers from the GLIRC who made everything possible.
