The recent decision by the Farmingdale Village Board to close the day laborers site on Front Street is both cowardly and dishonest. It is cowardly because the village board is "passing the buck" on the need to find a permanent spot for the Hispanic day laborers. It is dishonest because the sudden zoning law requirements, which now preclude the day laborers from congregating on Front Street, seem to coincide nicely with the Village's publicity campaign to "discover Farmingdale" in preparation for the US Golf Open next June.
One wonders why the recent board meeting did not include on the agenda, yet the Sachem Quality of Life people were present when the day laborers issue was raised. One also wonders what the village board members were thinking when they allow the SQL, which associates with national race hate groups, to speak publicly without proper notice to those groups which favor the day laborers right to work.
