New York State Assemblyman Steve Labriola recently announced that through the cooperative efforts of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Nassau County Department of Public Works and the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department a portion of the Unqua Lake at Marjorie Post Park will be dredged.
"I am pleased that funding, the appropriate permits and a long term solution is in place to help alleviate the run-off of storm water which causes the lake to be filled with sand and silt causing stagnation," stated Labriola.
A basin will be created to "catch" the sediment as it travels. Nassau County Department of Public Works will dredge approximately 2,000 cubic yards of sediment from the northern boundary of the pond. The excavated material, once sufficiently dried, will be utilized by the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department on the Marjorie Post Park property. The material has been tested and is well within the limits for transport and disposal to suitable upland locations. The county will restore the eastern shoreline when the dredging is completed.
"This was a challenging project in as much as I had to coordinate state, county and town government to achieve the long term solution that our community expects and deserves Many thanks to Town Supervisor John Venditto and County Legislator Peter Schmitt for their assistance. I am extremely pleased that this much needed project will proceed," commented Labriola.
The Nassau County Department of Public Works is expected to begin the work in early July.
