Nassau County Police Officer Matthew Murphy, a resident of Farmingdale who was charged with sex charges when he allegedly forced a woman to perform oral sex last August, has agreed to completely resign from the police department in exchange for more lenient sentencing.
Murphy agreed to plead guilty on third degree bribe receiving and charges of official misconduct. In exchange for a lesser sentence, a charge of sodomy was dropped and he agreed to resign from the police department earlier this week.
"We had been in conference with the defense, the police, the victim and her attorney and we felt it was in everybody's best interest to accept [the plea]," said Rick Hinshaw of the district attorney's office.
Murphy, who originally faced up to 25 years of prison time, was sentenced to five years probation in court on Tuesday. When he first appeared in court in February, following his late January arrest, Murphy was stripped of his police uniform and later returned to work, reassigned to desk duty.
The 32-year-old victim whose identity is not being released by police said in a statement earlier this week that she finds the plea reasonable. "The most important thing is he can't do this to anyone ever again. My goal was to get him out of uniform."
