William (Bill) J. Purcell, retired Farmingdale Postmaster, died unexpectedly on April 23, 2001. Bill was a WWII Army veteran who remained in the reserves for 20 years. After 37 years of service, he retired in 1978 as postmaster from the US Postal Service. He was a member of VFW Post #516 and served as an usher for 46 years, was a member of the Holy Name Society, Nocturnal Adoration Society, Friday Night Bingo and on the Building and Grounds Committee for the Church Restoration. Husband and best friend of Laurette (nee Taylor). Father of JoAnn, Jerry, Tim, Peg, Kevin, Doug and Julie. Father-in-law of Paco, Patty, Terri, Doris and Louis. Grandfather of 10. James J. McKenna, formerly of Farmingdale, passed away peacefully in his 92nd year on April 27, 2001. Husband of Dorothy H. McKenna and the late Henrietta. He was former Village Clerk of Farmingdale and a longtime member of the Farmingdale Fire Dept. Arrangements were made by the St. James Funeral Home. Funeral Mass at Sts. Philip and James RC Church. Paul Phelan, 76, a resident of Farmingdale and formerly of Pleasantville, NY, passed away on April 28, 2001, at the Bronx Kingsbridge VA Hospital after a long illness due to blood and bone infections. He was a WWII paraplegic Army veteran of the Rhineland and Ardennes Campaigns during the war in Europe and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, European Mid-East Ribbon with two battle stars, American Theater Ribbon and WWII Victory Medal. He was severely injured by German machine gun fire in his shoulder, chest, thighs and legs during the Battle of the Bulge and lay in snow for 48 hours before being rescued. Mr. Phelan was a graduate of Iona College in New Rochelle.
He is survived by Donald and Lillian Phelan of Toms River, NJ; Eileen Sobka of Resida, CA; Gertrude Phelan of Thornwood, NY; and 18 nieces and nephews.
