The Farmingdale Girls U-9 tournament team ended an outstanding indoor season with a spectacular win at the Meadowlands on April 7. The girls entered the first ever MetroStars Coliseum Cup Tournament.
The tournament started on Tuesday, March 27, when the girls traveled to New Jersey for the qualifying part of the tournament. They played four 30 minute games straight while winning three and tying one. In their first game they played a travel team, Washington Township, NJ and won 3-0. In the second game they played last year's state champions from NJ and gave up a goal with 10 seconds left and tied the Americans SC team. In their third game they beat a feisty travel team from Clarkstown, NY 1-0. In their last game they needed a four goal margin to qualify for the championship game at the Meadowlands. They beat a tough team from Hicksville, 6-1. When all the games were finished they were tied with the Americans team and beat them through the tiebreaker process.
This enabled the girls to play a travel team from Thistle, NJ for the championship on April 7, before the MetroStars season opener. Farmingdale won the game 1-0 and were crowned champs at a half time celebration at the MetroStars game.
The coaches and parents are extremely proud of the 10 girls who played so hard throughout the tournament. The Farmingdale team had balanced scoring throughout the tournament. The girls used outstanding one-on-one skills and passing to control the pace of the game. All six offensive players scored. They were Vanessa Amezquita, Samantha Baum, Lisa Campbell, Diana Halpin, Jaime Hart, and Kayla Mueger. The whole team played aggressive defense throughout the tournament. Tara Coyle, who also scored in the championship game, Meghan Campbell, and Sarah Mulcahy led the defense. In goal, Farmingdale had Lauren Berlingo, who gave up only two goals in five games. Unable to play and missed was Cassandra Beggen, Meghan Milana, Codi Reiser, and Kristen Zimmerman.
This tournament was the perfect ending to a great indoor season. The girls just finished in second place in a Paul Riley indoor league played throughout the winter. They played U-9 teams from all over Long Island. They also won an indoor tournament sponsored by Paul Riley that was a combination of U-9 tournament teams and U-10 travel teams.
