I have been associated with the Farmingdale Foxes Ladies Soccer team in the Long Island Ladies Soccer League (LILSL) for the past 11 seasons (5 1/2 years). The Foxes have played in the first or second division of the LILSL for the past six seasons. The Farmingdale Foxes have been in existence for over 20 years. All of the LILSL games are played at 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoons.
The Foxes' roster is made up of predominantly Farmingdale residents and includes many past outstanding Farmingdale High School female athletes. These well skilled female athletes include nurses, teachers, accountants, doctors, as well as housewives, among other fields. Many of these women have children who are also involved with the Farmingdale soccer program.
For years the Foxes home field was at East Memorial School. The schedule was arranged so that the Foxes and the Pink Panthers (another Farmingdale team in existence for 20 years) had alternate home games. The Foxes have never had any altercations regarding field use because for the past two seasons they have moved away from Farmingdale or played their home games at their opponents' fields. During this time, the Foxes, as well as the Pink Panthers, have had the proper field permits for the Farmingdale fields. The Foxes have been apprised of the unpleasant confrontations encountered by the Pink Panthers. The Foxes have decided to avoid these confrontations by simply moving their home field to another town. Last season, another incident between the Pink Panthers and another Farmingdale travel team took place on the same field over the very same issue. That incident involved more disturbing behavior and inappropriate language by the children's coaches and parents than the simple "sitting on the net" as was quoted in last week's letter.
It should be noted that Farmingdale is a town with many schools and a lighted town field for weekend soccer use. It would seem that we should be able to better allocate the field usage. It is not right that two teams of essentially Farmingdale taxpaying female resident/athletes which have been in existence for 20 years are simply "thrown out of town." It is also ridiculous that two different groups are issued permits during the same time slot for the same Farmingdale facility. How does this happen?
