On Saturday, Feb. 3, the Farmingdale Fireballs traveled to the Teaneck Armory to compete in an indoor tournament at the Soccer Coliseum. The U8 Girls played four teams from New Jersey in 28 minute games during the four and one half hour event. The first contest pitted the Fireballs against a completely overmatched "Maroons" team. With a final score of 7-0, the girls from Long Island were never challenged. The next two games however, were very competitive as the "Wayne Fury" held the Fireballs scoreless for the first 12 minutes. The 0-0 tie was finally broken when the Fireballs scored the first goal in an eventual 3-0 victory for the Farmingdale team.
The next game against a team from Manalapan was closer than the final score of 4-1 as the final outcome was not determined until eight minutes left in the contest. In fact, Manalapan had gotten the score to 2-1 until the Fireballs put the game away with two late tallies. The first semifinal game had the Long Island team matched up against the New Jersey "Arsenal." This game was never in doubt as the Fireballs scored early and defeated the Arsenal by a 4-1 margin.
The Championship game was a rematch of the second game of the day with the Fireballs facing the "Wayne Fury." The Fireballs scored the first goal of the contest but the Fury came back and tied the score shortly after. The game remained tied until seven minutes left when the Fireballs put a perfect shot underneath the left arm of the Fury's goalie, putting them ahead to stay. A few minutes later, the Fireballs scored another goal on a beautiful crossing pass, completing the run to the title for the Farmingdale girls.
The team was led offensively by Katie Brosnan, Kelly Conway, Jamie Leone, Katie Mazza, Kyra Ochwat, Michelle Switach and Julia Wooten while Cara Fellin, Jordyn Hasemann, Kelly McPartland and Amy Neuburger anchored the defense. Kayla Ernst had an outstanding day, playing all five games in one goal, making several outstanding saves.
Coaches Brosnan and Neuburger were extremely proud of the two-way effort displayed by the Fireballs. In fact, several people agreed with Coach Brosnan when he stated "With only five players on the field at a time, all of the girl contributed both offensively and defensively to the 5-0 record."
